Clélie Cottle Peacock began working for New South Associates in 2019 as an archaeological field technician and became a permanent member of the team in 2023, serving as an Assistant Archaeologist in the Nashville branch office. Clélie earned their A.S. degree in History from Motlow State Community College, their B.S. in Anthropology
with a minor in Archaeology from Middle Tennessee State University, and an Advanced Certificate in GIS from the University of Memphis. Clélie will complete their M.A. in Anthropology with a focus in Archaeology from the University of Southern Mississippi in May 2024. They are currently wrapping up work on their thesis project, which is focused on the former site of the Bass Street Baptist Church at Fort Negley- one of the earliest post emancipation Black/African American community churches in Nashville, Tennessee.
Clélie has experience doing research, fieldwork, laboratory and geospatial analysis, and
curation for both historical and pre-contact/prehistoric sites and cemeteries throughout the Southeast. For the recent Davidson County Cemetery Survey Phase 2 project, Clélie served as the New South archaeological field director working alongside New South Senior Historian Dr. Lydia Simpson and representatives from the Metro Nashville and Davidson County Historical Commission to help create a county-wide preservation plan for Nashville’s historical cemeteries. Clélie has worked in Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
