Architectural History Training Module for U.S. Army

Many CRMs have training and experience primarily as archaeologists, although their duties include managing historic architectural resources, such as buildings, structures, sites, objects, and districts. Preservation management approaches between archaeology and historic architecture are similar. Architectural history, however, is its own discipline and contains concepts that may be unfamiliar to archaeologists. IMCOM G-4 has recognized a need to provide training to bridge the gap between the professional experience and training of archaeologists with the specialized needs of managing historic architecture.

New South developed the architectural history modules in cooperation with the U.S. Army Installation Management Command (IMCOM) and the St. Louis Corps of Engineers Mandatory Center of Expertise in the Curation and Management of Archaeological Collections. Recognizing that many of the cultural resource managers in the Army are archaeologists, IMCOM sought a training program that could inform them of the array of historic architecture found on their installations and the things to look for in resource identification, evaluation and management. We are very pleased to have had a chance to support IMCOM in this effort and know it will be a value to their management of cultural heritage.
